Post Covid-19, many businesses have seen an exponential shift in what they knew as normal in their industries. The barbering and hair industry are no different and while they have seen rapid growth post-covid, due to the visibility and cultural relevance that social media exposure brought them, it has also turned barbers into brands, shops into destinations and haircuts into content.
On any given day at Hectic Cutz, the atmosphere is unmistakable; upbeat, consistent and confident, with clients sitting back, relaxed, knowing they are in capable hands. It may look effortless, but it is the result of years of discipline, calculated risk and relentless consistency, all led by founder and CEO Sagar Taheem that rose to fame in the thick of Covid-19 and today owns 3 business ventures, under the banner of Hectic Cutz.Inc. A brand he built with passion, discipline and unwavering determination.

Taheem’s path into barbering was anything but linear. To outsiders it may seem like a set path that was pursued as a childhood dream. Dream it was indeed, but not to be a barber, but to serve and make people happy. After graduating high school, he had his eyes set on law enforcement. To pursue policing with credibility, he enrolled at NAIT, completing a diploma in accounting and business administration, a credential that would later prove unexpectedly valuable. Yet, along the way a growing frustration with consistently poor haircuts sparked a shift. “I would go to my favorite shop, for my regular barber to get the same cut again and somehow, I would return with nothing I ever asked for,” says Taheem. And so, he began experimenting on himself, learning razor techniques from a cousin in New York. What started as curiosity quickly became passion that aligned with his passion and purpose; to serve.
Curiosity and experimentation led him to MC College, where he initially explored women’s hairstyling, drawn to the versatility, creativity and complexity of colouring and design. But midway through his studies, he found himself across another shift as he felt increasingly drawn to men’s cuts and barbering. The precision, structure and technical challenge piqued his interest and while the curriculum offered only limited exposure to barbering, Taheem took it upon himself to learn outside the classroom.
That independence, curiosity and exploration would become defining traits.
Juggling two programs at once as he returned to NAIT in evenings to complete a missed accounting credit, Taheem stood out not only for his green hair during group presentations, but for his growing confidence, clarity and determination towards his purpose. By the time he graduated, he held two diplomas and a clear direction: build a career in barbering, on his own terms.
His early years were spent employed at shops that served as breeding grounds for the entrepreneur inside him, including Tommy Gun’s, where he sharpened his technical skills and learned the realities of shop culture. For four to five years, Taheem worked behind the chair, slowly building a clientele and an online presence. While many barbers treated social media as optional, Taheem approached it as non-negotiable as he filmed his progress with passion.
For two straight years, he posted up to three times a day, every morning, afternoon and night, without missing a single day. “It wasn’t about going viral,” Taheem says. “It was about discipline.” Over time, that consistency compounded, creating visibility, credibility and trust.
The turning point came unexpectedly. Through a client connection, Taheem was referred to an NHL player. When initial outreach went unanswered, he dug deeper, contacted the player’s agent and sent his portfolio. The next morning, the reply came in, and with it, momentum. Once the haircut was posted, his direct messages flooded. Bookings filled weeks in advance.

Growth followed quickly. Or it may seem that way to many. But it was the product of years of consistency, discipline and determination.
What began as an independent studio evolved into Hectic Cutz Inc., now a multi-location barbershop brand in Edmonton. Despite never initially planning to open a shop, Taheem found himself drawn to the business side, operations, systems and scaling. “I enjoy it more now,” he says. “The business aspect; it’s what drives me, it’s what keeps me up at nights as I explore ways to grow my impact.”
Today, Hectic Cutz extends far beyond haircuts. The brand includes HCI Academy, which offers tailored, skill-focused barber education for working professionals, and Hectic Marketing, a full-service creative agency supporting local entrepreneurs with content creation, social media management, SEO and branding. Each created with a purpose that boils down to what he feels like he wished he had knowledge of and access to when he was starting out. And at the heart of it all is Hectic Cutz.Inc, with the purpose he had from day one, to serve as he grows his businesses in various service industries.

His barber education program, HCI Academy, avoids mass enrollment and focuses on one-on-one and small-group instruction for barbers who already have experience but want to refine their skills. “It’s handmade,” Taheem explains, “and definitely not a one-size-fits-all model.” A true reflection of Taheem’s belief that education should be personalized, practical and grounded in real shop environments.
At the core of Taheem’s leadership philosophy is adaptability. He views learning as continuous, whether
through marketing trends or business strategy. Looking ahead, Taheem is gradually stepping back from the chair as he has found a bigger purpose that prioritizes longevity and growth. His long-term vision centres on leadership, mentorship and industry advancement. “I don’t want to disappear,” he says, “I just don’t need to be cutting all the time.”
And as he progresses, for Taheem, success isn’t defined by clippers anymore. It’s about building systems, people and opportunities and proving that barbering, when treated with discipline and intention, can be a legitimate, scalable profession.\
